"NCS undertook a complete refurbishment of our new SYP site Europa 3, the works included adaption of the existing heating and cooling systems, lighting, fire alarm and data installs. The install included new UPS and generator support for the site. The works were undertaken to a very high standard and the internal feedback from Stakeholders was very positive and the building is now being considered as the new precedent for future SYP refurbishment projects."

Case Study Summary

As a move to modernise its building portfolio and house its growing Operations unit, South Yorkshire Police obtained a former office facility at Europa Way, Sheffield.

Infinity was asked to design and price all services associated with power and data, as well as mechanical, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), fire, access control and generator back-up facilities.

Case Study Overview

Infinity was asked to design and price all services associated with power and data, as well as mechanical, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), fire, access control and generator back-up facilities for former offices in Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police had purchased the premises at Europa Way in a move to modernise its building portfolio and accommodate its growing Operations unit. The building, which has three open-plan floors, as well as general office facilities, was deemed to be more suitable for the relevant activities than the current site.

The client wanted to use and alter existing infrastructure, such as power track, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems and lighting panels.

Here Infinity was able to design options for employing existing systems, while adding modern controls to ensure more economical usage. One such solution was to supply additional passive, infrared (PIR) automatic lighting controls in new office areas and large open-plan floor spaces to enable electrical savings.

Infinity also opted to introduce some heat recover ventilation (HRV) units, enabling savings on electricity for heating the building. New back-up generator and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems were designed to allow the building to be fully functional through grid disruptions.

We also suggested the installation and design of sky and cloud scene lighting for a wellbeing room with no external windows. This has enabled the space to be more relaxing and comfortable for staff, offering the stimulation of an outdoor experience or a suggestion of looking through windows.

Case Study Impact

Infinity’s work on this project resulted in the extension and futureproofing of infrastructure that was vital to South Yorkshire Police service.

It helped to support the growth operational policing and enabled a more efficient and effective policing for communities it serves in South Yorkshire.

The building is now capable of being fully self-sufficient; able to operate on and off grid.

The wellbeing of staff working for the service has been improved with the new technology – such as sky and cloud lighting – in the building.

South Yorkshire Police has also been able to lower costs: it was paying rent on its previous temporary accommodation and its energy costs should now be lower.

Through the use of VRF, LED lighting controls and HRV units there will be a reduced use of energy. This will have a positive impact on building running costs and budget savings.

During the project, Infinity involved four South Yorkshire-based apprentices, three of whom were employed internally and one externally, via a sub-contractor.
